Death Toll Climbs as Rain Lashes Punjab
Over just two days, Heavy Rains Trigger Floods that have claimed the lives of at least 33 people across different districts of Punjab. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, 28 lives were lost and 90 others injured, while Thursday alone saw five more deaths and dozens more hurt, according to officials.
Lahore, Faisalabad, Pakpattan, Sheikhupura, and Okara were among the worst-hit areas. In one heartbreaking case from Mandi Bahauddin, a 10-year-old boy drowned while playing in the floodwaters. In another shocking incident, two young boys were electrocuted during the rain.
Roofs of old houses also gave way, injuring people and turning homes into danger zones. The heavy rains triggered floods that didn’t just damage roads and buildings they tore apart families and left communities reeling.
Chakwal Submerged After Overnight Cloudburst
The city of Chakwal faced a terrifying night as a cloudburst dumped 400mm of rain in just 10 hours, causing heavy rains to trigger floods in almost every corner of the district. Streets turned into rivers, cars were swept away, and several neighborhoods were completely cut off.
Evacuation missions began at dawn as water finally began to recede. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said helicopters and rescue teams are on standby. Hospitals and schools have been converted into relief shelters, while coordination with the military has also been initiated for extra support.
District Commissioner Quratul Ain Malik confirmed that rescue workers from WASA, Rescue 1122, and the local administration are working nonstop to bring people to safety.
Rawalpindi, Mandi Bahauddin & More: The Rain Doesn’t Stop
In Rawalpindi, the water level in Leh Nullah reached dangerous levels, forcing the PMD to issue a flood alert for Gawalmandi and Kattarian bridges. Authorities warned that if the level rises above 15.7 feet, serious flooding may follow.
In Mandi Bahauddin, 210mm of rain led to one child’s death and 11 injuries. From roof collapses to electrocutions, the city was battered in multiple ways. Streets in College Chowk and Jail Chowk were submerged under up to 4 feet of water.
As heavy rains trigger floods yet again, citizens are being urged to stay home, avoid going near power lines or open manholes, and follow official warnings. With the monsoon season continuing till July 17, the worst may not be over.
